FAQS

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
BJJ is a highly developed grappling martial art. It is the “gentle art” in the sense that in a real altercation a practitioner may safely force his opponent to surrender or put him unconscious. (Striking martial arts are riskier in that concussions and fatalities are more likely to occur when in a real-life altercation.)

Can I really start as an absolute beginner?
Yes. We focus on beginners who have or lack athletic attributes.

Am I too old to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
I have non-athletic students who started in their sixties and there are they are moving and grooving like everyone else.

Do I need to be physically flexible?
No. Coach Erik is not flexible so anything involving extreme positions will NOT be in our training curriculum.

Can girls and women train?
Absolutely. The techniques of BJJ are based on the principles of physics. Even a very weak female can multiply her power output by factors of 4 and sometimes 10.

Do you have a competition team?
We will when COVID-19 taps out!

How many days a week do I need to train to see results?
I have noticed over the past 8 years of full-time coaching that most students need about 2 or 3 days a week on the mat to really develop.

Can my child join?
As long as the child...
1.  ..is willing to participate they'll do just fine.
2.  ..has a training partner less than 3x larger then them.

What should I wear to training?
SLL has branded long-sleeve rashguards which are recommended to avoid mat burn;
and they help protect against bacteria and getting abrasions.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu effective?  BJJ is a highly practical form of self-defense which has been proven in the context of mixed martial arts competition and fights around the globe. Submission grappling is a style of combat focused on bringing down and controlling one's opponent on the ground by using leverage, body weight, frames, and balance.  While retaining control, the practitioner will use a finishing technique such as a choke or joint lock bringing the match or fight to a close.
